Mobile Sharing Schemes Phling & HooQs: Apps Unleashing Content & User Creativity

Some mobile content sharing networks that caught my attention in this post from Hamish Mackenzie over at inbabble.com. He recently critiqued two new entrants, HooQs and Phling, that dovetail well with users’ demands for content on their terms. (But as cool as these services are – they face considerable competition from the usual suspects…) HooQs is a video and audio sharing portal that lets users search and browse for content for their mobile devices. It allows users to create their own channels or collections of video clips that they can use themselves or share with others. They can also sign up for Daily HooQs and receive recommended content based on their preferences. Kudos to them for working on personalization – an element many other offers have ignored entirely…

Taking a different tact, Phling is a service that lets users serve media from their home PCs to mobile devices. Your podcasts, music, photos–Phling aims to let you access them while on the move and share them with up to six friends for a monthly fee. The model is attractive, but Hamish questioned why someone would choose it over an iPod and whether its data traffic burden will scare off casual users.

Peggy adds: Good catch on this, Brad. I contacted HooQs today for a briefing – so more from me on the personalization and recommendation aspects of the service soon. Oxy Systems has taken Phling to European mobile operators (It’s live in Switzerland, for example. More in this release.) The service also has its fans among bands and indie labels that use Phling as a promotional channel to connect with a mobile community of music lovers and showcase their music for free.

Yes – I’ve seen that and plan to profile on the site – if you’re connected then let me know and we can take this off-line. Next week also feature a podcast with Phling.
